Lutein is an antioxidant in the carotenoid family (a group of naturally occurring fat-soluble pigments found in plants). Lutein is the primary carotenoid present in the central area of the retina of the eye called the macula.

The Last study (Lutein Antioxidant Supplementation Trail) is the first published clinical trail to record actual improvement in several key vision functions among patients with "dry" AMD, the most common form of the disease. The data appears in the April 2004 issue of Optometry - Journal of the American Optometric Association.
Prior t this study, Lutein was widely believed to be purely a preventative measure in reducing risk in the onset of AMD (age-related masular degeneration).
