What is melatonin?
Melatonin is a hormone manufactured by serotonin and secreted by the pineal gland. It plays a key role as the biological timekeeper of hormone secretion, also known as the circadian rhythm.
How does melatonin work?
When an individual on a normal circadian rhythm is exposed to darkness, melatonin is released. Melatonin in the body reduces alertness levels and promotes relaxation. The end result is sleep. Upon exposure to light, melatonin levels drop off and the individual begins to become more alert and awake.
Melatonin and Jet Lag
Jet lag occurs when the body crosses time zones and has to adjust to the new zone; the greater the distance, the greater the effects of jet lag. Melatonin can be used to help prevent jet lag before it occurs. The theory is simple: If jet lag occurs as the body is trying to adjust, adjust the body before jet lag occurs.
Melatonin and Insomnia
Melatonin supplementation works ideally when levels normally produced by the pineal gland are low. If insomnia occurs as a result of naturally low melatonin levels, melatonin supplementation may be recommended. Recommended Dosage: Adults, take one tablet at bedtime. Do not take more than two tablets daily unless directed by a physician.
Caution: Use only at bedtime. For adult use only. Not for use by children, teenagers, or pregnant or lactating women. If you are under medical supervision, or have an auto-immune disease, diabetes, a depresive disorder, epilepsy, leukemia, or a lymphoproliferative disorder, or are taking MAO inhibitor drugs or corticosteroids such as cortisol or prednisone, consult with your physician before taking this product.
