Okay, so Granny won't be climbing Mt. Everest. Then again, maybe she will.
On May 25, 2001, Sherman Bull (joined by his son Brad Bull) became the
oldest person to ascend Sagarmatha (the Nepalese name for Mt. Everest
- it means goddess of the sky -- www.mnteverest.net/history.html).
He was 64. One year away from retirement! Active? Yes.
It's becoming a bit of a dilemma. The elderly don't want to be brushed to the side, left to wait for the Grim Reaper.
Still, not all of them are active members of society. Right now longevity and vim are a toss of the genetic die.
That's where medical technology comes into play. As something biological breaks, there's someone trying to fix it.
Of course the question arises, "Why does it have to break?" For now, that's inevitable. Death can only be postponed
not preempted. (OR Death is a binding contract with no escape clause. Which one sounds better?)
Aging is a topic that has formed the crux of many research foundations. Current studies have revealed some interesting
results in the causes of aging. Of the findings, the declination of levels of Somatotrophin has garnered a great fervor
of attention. In plain English: Scientist are looking at the causes of declining levels of Human Growth Hormones (hGH)
and trying to figure out solutions.
According to D. Mark Ladley, MD in "The Role of Oral Growth Hormone Secretagogues in Anti-Aging Therapy" -- presented
at the European International Conference on Quality of Life and Longevity Medicine, Sept. 1998 -- "It is known that the
aging pituitary somatotroph cells are capable of secreting as much hGH as the young somatotroph cells when they are
adequately stimulated. The primary influences on age-related decrease in hGH secretion include reduced production of
GHRH (growth hormone-releasing hormone) and increased production of somatostatin, the hypothalamic inhibitor of hGH
release."
Doctors Ronald Klatz and Robert Goldman, in their book "Stopping the Clock: Dramatic Breakthroughs In Anti-Aging
And Age Reversal Techniques", cite a 1990 study saying:
"The first landmark study to show the effects of hGH on elderly humans was reported in 1990 by Dr. Daniel Rudman,
professor of medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin and associate chief of staff for extended care at the
Milwaukee Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Rudman and his colleagues conducted the study to determine whether hGH would
produce physiological changes in men who were deficient in the hormone.
|
"Twenty-one men between the ages of 60 and 80 were injected with supplemental hGH three times a week for six months.
Another nine men in the same age range served as a control group." . . . "Yet the men receiving the hGH showed marked
improvement in health and appearance: a 14.4 percent decrease in fatty tissue, an 8.8 percent increase in muscle and
lean tissue, a 7.1 percent increase in skin thickness, and a 1.6 percent increase in average density of the vertebrae
in the lower back. In effect, a decade or two of aging had actually been reversed." |
As stated, this was the first study to document the effects of hGH. At the time of the study injections were the only
method for effectively boosting levels of hGH. Through research and technology, secretagogues came into play.
Secretagogues are products that have the function of causing the body to release the hGH that it produces. In order for the body to produce these hormones, however, essential amino acids are required. Doctor Klatz states, in "Grow Young with hGH", "Twenty amino acids form the building blocks of all proteins and, as such, are needed for the body to make the proteins of enzymes, many hormones, muscle, bone, skin, organs, etc." He continues by saying, "A number of the amino acids have been shown to induce growth hormone secretion."
Early on, if you wanted to supplement your diet with these products, it would mean taking a tailor-made mix of supplements to achieve the desired results. Bodybuilders refer to this as "stacking". Fortunately, products are now available that "stack" supplements. You have but to decide the desired effect. For example, if you are looking for something to help you with that diet you may want to try "GH Dieters Super Formula". The product was formulated for burning fat, assisting digestion, controlling and regulating your appetite." Or, if you are already in shape but need that extra edge to help "contour and redistribute fat, tone and shape muscles and enhance sharpness of muscle definition to give a 'cut appearance'.", then "Muscle Definition Super Formula" maybe the product that's right for you.
Those are but two of the many hGH supplements out there. Some work in conjunction with one another. Others may be geared towards men or women. Human Growth Hormone supplementation can even help damaged or weak nails. The list goes on. For a list of hGH products this site carries click here.
With active hGH now in your system your body has the potential to effectively re-set the clock by up to 20 years. Your quality of life can be improved in a variety of ways, from losing fat and gaining muscle to removing wrinkles and eliminating cellulite. As research continues and more information is discovered, more benefits are unveiling themselves. The following is a selection from "Grow Young With hGH" of the many possible benefits of hGH:
- Lose fat, gain muscle
- Increase Energy Level
- Increase Immune Function
- Enhance Sexual Performance
- Increase Cardiac Output
- Improve Skin Elasticity
- Remove Wrinkles
- Eliminate Cellulite
- Improve Vision
|
- Increase Memory Retention
- Improve Quality of Sleep
- Increase Exercise Performance
- Lower Blood Pressure
- Improve Cholesterol Profile
- Increase Bone Mass
- Quicken Wound Healing
- Give Grim Reaper his pink slip!

Okay the last one isn't exactly a benefit yet but scientists have merely touched the tip of the iceberg and there is a long way to go. In the immediate future look for the quality of life to be improved. In the distant future . . . maybe Death will be out of a job. At the very least he may finally get a vacation!
Of course Human Growth Hormone supplementation is only a part of the journey. A major part of life is the attitude you carry with you throughout. Anais Nin once said, "I postpone death by living, by suffering, by error, by risking, by living, by losing." That's good advice. Imagine if she'd had known about hGH!
Miguel de Unamuno y Jugo summed-up our societal views in saying, "Science says: 'We must live,' and seeks the means of prolonging, increasing, facilitating and amplifying life, of making it tolerable and acceptable, wisdom says: 'We must die,' and seeks how to make us die well."
And that is the point on which we should focus. Live life to its full potential. I'd like to close this column by adding a verse to a Dylan Thomas poem with which many of us are probably familiar:
Old age can end in a torturous blight.
Can we take action and hold Death at bay?
hGH may be our warrior knight.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Heed the advice that I, to you, convey.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
